For years, downtown Greenville's Main Street had nearly every kind of restaurant except a Vietnamese one. Cần Thơ Bistro & Bar changed that in the summer of 2026, opening in the storefront beside Carolina Ale House and bringing a full Vietnamese kitchen to the busiest stretch of sidewalk in the Upstate. It is the work of Lisa and Charlie Doan, who ran restaurants up in Minnesota, swore they were finished, and got talked out of retirement by Cheng Yap of Sushi Murasaki once he pointed out that no one downtown was cooking the food they grew up on. Both came to the States as refugees after the Vietnam War and reached Greenville by way of Louisiana, and the menu leans on family recipes carried the whole way. The name points home, too: Cần Thơ is a river city in Vietnam's Mekong Delta. The menu runs broad and the room was built for sharing, with big tables set out on purpose so there is space, in the owners' own words, for all the aunts and uncles. Takeout covers the nights you would rather have Vietnamese comfort food on the couch. It is still early days, but the first diners have been quick to praise the space itself, the crispy egg rolls, and the house fried rice. Which dishes downtown ends up lining up for is the part still being decided, one table at a time.

Part cafe, part curated market, The Pantry is the kind of downtown spot where you can grab a matcha latte and a breakfast taco, then walk out with a bottle of wine and a gift you meant to buy for yourself. Emily Fournier runs it as a gourmet bodega tucked below Menkoi on North Main, and the "little bit of everything" is the whole point: hot food, coffee and espresso, grocery finds, charcuterie, small-vineyard wines, cold local beer, and shelves of sundries and local goods. The kitchen leans farm-to-table and seasonal, cooks seed-oil free, and works around food allergies rather than treating them as an afterthought. Mornings bring bagels with house spreads, loaded omelets like the short rib with manchego, and gluten-free pastries baked in house. Lunch moves to bright salads and artisan sandwiches. There's a small eating nook under the stairs if you'd rather stay a while, plus the occasional wine night or truffle tasting. Locals have taken to it fast, trading it around as one of Main Street's hidden gems. What the shelves and the menu don't spell out is the backstory. Emily left a career as a litigator to chase a restaurant dream at fifty, and The Pantry is only the first of two concepts she's bringing to this stretch of Main.

This is a lunch cafe with a purpose most restaurants can't claim. It's a nonprofit social enterprise, and the women preparing and serving the food are residents and graduates of Jasmine Road, a two-year residential program for survivors of trafficking, exploitation, and addiction. The kitchen exists to give them real jobs, hands-on training, and a paycheck while they rebuild, the first effort of its kind in Greenville. By the reviews, the food more than holds its own. It's scratch-made and chef-driven, built around what they call inspired soups, salads, sandwiches, and sweets, and the menu rotates, so regulars come back to see what's new rather than to reorder a usual. Beyond the dining room and patio, a small retail shop sells handmade candles, jewelry, and pantry items like their house-made Golden Granola, and that side of the business feeds the mission too. That pairing is what diners bring up again and again: a genuinely good midday meal that also sends their money somewhere it matters. It's the rare lunch spot people leave feeling like the hour did a little more than fill them up.

Some Greenville places you measure in years. This one you measure in generations. Carolina Drive In has been a fixture on Rutherford Street since 1954, still run by the same family that opened it, and it has fed the north side of town for the better part of seven decades. The heart of it is honest Southern home cooking: an early breakfast, a meat-and-three lunch built around featured meats and vegetables that rotate day to day, and the burgers, hot dogs, and fried chicken that made the name. There is also a genuine Greek streak running through the menu, so gyros and Greek fries turn up right alongside the Southern comfort plates. It still works the way a drive-in should, quick and easygoing at once, with a patio out front. Regulars describe it as their standing weekly lunch, the kind of place that fills up at noon on the strength of fair prices, fresh plates, and a staff that knows the room. What lands on the featured board changes with the day, so the surest way to find out is to pull in and see what they are cooking.

Holy Mōlli comes from Luis and Lydia Stark, a married couple who built the menu around Sinaloa, the coastal Mexican state they came from, where fresh seafood, ranch meat, and bright vegetables shape the cooking. The name plays on mole, and it hints at the whole idea here: take Sinaloan food and let it wander into other cuisines. The clearest example is the Mexican sushi roll, an oversized roll packed with Mexican fillings, fried and sliced, lifted straight from the roadside sushi stands the Starks grew up around back home. Ordering runs along a build-your-own line that anyone who has done fast-casual will recognize, though the fillings get specific: chicken plain or spicy, steak, shrimp, grilled veggies, or tofu, folded into burritos, bowls, tacos, nachos, and quesadillas. The mōlli sauces are where the name earns itself, with chipotle, mushroom, and chocolate versions that regulars tend to have strong opinions about. Beyond the line, birria and birria tacos have become their own draw, and guests keep coming back for the mole, the quesadillas, and the queso. It is also one of the few kitchens on this stretch of downtown still serving well past midnight on weekends, which makes it a natural landing spot after a night out on Main. Which mōlli you turn loyal to, and whether you go sushi roll or birria the first time, is the kind of thing you settle a plate at a time.
